All Grain Brewing A process of brewing beer using only malted grains instead of extracts. The grain is mixed with hot water in a Mash tun then drained. The resulting liquid in call Wort
Carboy A Large glass jar specifically designed to hold fermenting wort
Extract Brewing A process of brewing beer using canned or powdered malt extracts derived from malted grains
Final Gravity A measure of the unfermantable substances in beer after fermentation. When FG is compared to the Original Gravity, the exact alcoholic strength can be determined.
Hops One of the four principal ingredients of beer, hops are flower cones added to beer as a bittering agent, a preservative, and an aromatic.
Hydrometer A thermometer-like device used to measure the specific gravity to determine the proportion of potential alcohol in the beer.
Keg One-half barrel, or 15.5 U. S. gallons. A half keg or, 7.75 U. S. gallons, is referred to as a pony-keg.
Lager & Ales There are two categories of beer, Lagers and Ales. Lagers ferment at low temps (46 to 55) and Ales at higher temps (60 to 72)
Malt Barley thats steeped in water, germinated ,then kilned to convert insoluble starch to soluble substances and sugar. The foundation ingredient of beer.
Mash tun A container used in all grain brewing to mix hot water and grain, the result is wort
Original Gravity A measure of the fermentable and unfermentable substances in the wort before fermentation.
Partial Mash Brewing A brewing process where you would use extracts as well also some specialty grains to give more variety and greater flavor complexity. Most beer kits you buy use a partial mash process.
Wort A sweet liquid that comes from mashing grains or extracts mixed with water.
